Mike Massey's trick shot book has a couple shots like this one.
His "Scratching with Style" shot involves hitting the cue ball nearly full on the 8 ball but with force follow so it curves around and ahead of the 8, reaching the pocket before the 8 ball. If an opponent's ball is at the pocket, the cue ball can clear the path for the 8 without the cue ball scratching.
Another shot involves hitting the 8 ball with force follow, causing the cue ball to dance along the rail and clearing a pocket; meanwhile the 8 ball travels 3 rails around the table and sinks into the pocket that was cleared. (I like that shot.)
Here is the "Scratching with Style" shot by Dr. Cue, used to clear away the corner pocket before the 8 reaches it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bdiDanmcjEI
